Late Summer musings...
What does the sun do for you?
Hello dear ones,
I write this from my deck, home of Figs and Honey AND Bayview Cottage B&B. I am sitting, directly into the sun! Its August, its evening and I am bathed in it.
Am I wearing sunscreen.?...You betcha! Am I wearing store bought, chemical laden, hormone disrupting, carcinogenic, ocean destroying, sunscreen? Not likely. We have our own, freshly made, sunscreen that is ocean safe for marine life and algae etc, safe for babies to wear, and to be honest, I only have a little on my face. Our Vanilla Pudding day cream has a natural sunscreen in it but luckily I am blessed with olive skin from the Mediterranean, and I have come to the strong belief, that the sun is good for me. Without it....I'd be in trouble.
So....about the sun. Did you know that without the sun, our little human bodies would be very very sickly. No natural Vitamin D, (which let's be honest since Covid, every person on this planet, has learned to accept, is vital to our health and immunity). How do humans get vitamin D if we don't consume it from the store in little capsules? Very easily it turns out, just get outside and without even direct sunlight hitting your skin, you get it, as your body makes it....you guessed it...from the sun! 40 minutes covering 40% of your body...
There are variables for all people. Darkly coloured skin, like mine actually, (I am half Cypriot) needs a little more, as my melanin does a good job of protecting my body, and stops the sun from burning me. So the fairer you are, the less time you need in the sun and the more careful you should be in direct sun. Careful..I said...not slather yourself in Factor 50 and stay out of it. Why would you do that? You may feel safe from a sunburn, but your entire immune function, your brain receptors that give you a 'happy' feeling and healthy psyche, all need the sun. Your mitochondrial function, your immune system, your energy levels...all impacted directly by your ability to get outdoors and breathe in the air and the sunshine. Those dark sunglasses? Helpful if you have very pale blue eyes for strong sunshine, but for everyone else, it blocks your ability to read the sun and adapt your body to protect you from it. This is science guys...not wooo wooo. Search it up!
I could go into great detail about this topic, but hopefully I am touching on it enough for you to do your own research. Learn, grow and as a result hopefully, get out into the sunshine and enjoy it, safely, yes. But please, for the love of....get out and stay healthy and happy and alive. Without the sun, nothing would grow, nothing would survive and frankly life would be pretty boring for us all. In fact, did you know, that hanging your laundry outside, is not just great to save on power...the sun literally kills bacteria laden molecules that are living in those sheets and underwear! Protecting your body from, who knows what little bugs, lurking in the fibres. Turns out Grandma knew a thing or two, hanging all her laundry out! Then there's the smell....freshly dried laundry from the washing line. OMG....it's worth it just for that!
Ill talk about the moon another time...thats another massively impacting force on our hormones and body. To be continued.....
